Typhoid Cases Spike in Tshwane: What You Need to Know

The City of Tshwane has launched a full investigation following a concerning increase in laboratory-confirmed cases of typhoid fever, particularly in the Bronkhorstspruit and Hammanskraal areas. The metro is working diligently with various health and sanitation departments to pinpoint the source of the outbreak.

According to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, initial tests on drinking water samples haven't yet revealed the origin of the contamination. "The results have also not yet determined the source of the contamination," Mashigo stated, emphasizing the seriousness with which the city is treating the situation.

The investigation is a joint effort involving the Department of Health, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). The goal is to swiftly determine the cause of the rise in typhoid cases.

Stringent Water Testing in Place

Mashigo reassured residents that the metro regularly tests water quality throughout its network. To date, these tests have not detected the presence of Salmonella Typhi, the bacteria responsible for typhoid. The city maintains that all treated water supplied to residents meets the South African National Standard (SANS 241) for drinking water.

However, residents are strongly advised to avoid using untreated water from rivers or boreholes for any domestic purposes. They should rely solely on treated and tested municipal water.

Public Health Advice

The city is also urging communities to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing with soap and water and safe water storage methods.

"The city remains committed to transparency and public health protection. Updates will be shared with residents as and when there are developments on the matter," Mashigo assured.

DA Concerned, Calls for Careful Management

Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader Cilliers Brink has voiced concerns about the outbreak, stressing the need for a carefully managed response to prevent a potential tragedy. The DA is closely monitoring the situation and pushing for swift action.
