MSC Cruises is making waves – literally and figuratively! The cruise line has officially connected to shore power in New York City for the first time. The MSC Meraviglia plugged into the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marking a significant step towards cleaner air and a greener future for cruising.
Cutting Emissions, Improving Air Quality
This connection allows the MSC Meraviglia to switch off its engines while docked, eliminating local emissions. This initiative aligns with both the City's and MSC Cruises' commitment to improving air quality in port areas. It's a win-win for the environment and the local community.
A Fleet-Wide Commitment
MSC Cruises has been proactive in equipping its fleet with shore power capabilities. All new ships built since 2017 have this feature as standard, and the company is actively retrofitting existing vessels. Currently, 16 out of 23 ships are shore power-ready, with a 17th expected to be equipped by the end of the year. This demonstrates a serious dedication to sustainability.
Global Shore Power Success
MSC Group's Cruise Division recently celebrated a year of shore power success in Valletta, Malta. The MSC World Europa connected to the local grid for a total of 300 hours over 12 months. Furthermore, Explora Journeys' debut ship, EXPLORA I, also connected to shore power in Malta, showcasing the growing adoption of this technology.
Expanding Shore Power Network
Beyond New York and Malta, MSC Cruises is actively testing and implementing shore power connections in other ports. The MSC Seaview recently tested new facilities in La Spezia, Italy, and the MSC Poesia trialled landside plug-in capabilities in Le Havre, France. These efforts highlight the company's global commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
MSC Cruises first used shore power in the United States in April 2025, when the MSC World America plugged in at PortMiami. In 2024, MSC Cruises connected to shore power in 13 ports, making 142 successful connections – more than triple the number from the previous year.
Andrew Kimball, President & CEO, New York City Economic Development Corporation, stated that the NYCEDC is making critical investments in shore power upgrades at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and other marine terminals.
MSC Cruises' commitment to shore power represents a significant investment in a sustainable future for cruising. By reducing emissions and improving air quality, the company is setting a positive example for the industry.
