Massive Flight Disruptions Hit US Airports
Air travel in the United States is facing significant disruption due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered airlines to reduce flights at 40 of the nation’s busiest airports, leading to hundreds of cancellations and delays. Airports in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are among those affected.
The FAA's decision stems from staff shortages and increased stress among air traffic controllers, many of whom are working without pay during the shutdown. This has raised concerns about public safety, prompting the FAA to take action to reduce air traffic volume.
Worsening Situation Expected
The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days. The initial flight reduction target of 4% has already been increased to 6% and is set to rise further to 10% on Friday. This means even more flights will be cancelled or delayed, impacting thousands of travellers across the country.
On Monday alone, airlines scrapped over 2,300 flights, with more than 1,000 flights scheduled for Tuesday also cancelled. Aviation analytics company Cirium reports that the average cancellation rate already exceeds the FAA’s requirement, indicating the severity of the situation.
Business Jets and Private Flights Affected
The FAA has also expanded its flight restrictions to include business jets and many private flights, barring them from using a dozen airports already under commercial flight limits. This further restricts air travel and adds to the growing frustration among travellers.
Air Traffic Controller Stress
Unpaid for over a month, some air traffic controllers have started calling out of work due to stress and the need to take on second jobs. This is exacerbating the existing staff shortages and leading to further flight delays, including significant delays at major hubs like Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Travellers are advised to check their flight status regularly and be prepared for potential delays or cancellations. The government shutdown is having a significant impact on air travel, and disruptions are expected to continue until the shutdown is resolved.
