Civil society organisations are raising serious concerns over the Democratic Alliance's (DA) proposal to replace Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Dion George with Willem Aucamp, the party’s national spokesperson. Three letters have been sent to President Cyril Ramaphosa from prominent animal welfare and environmental groups, urging him to reject the proposed appointment.
Welfare Groups Unite Against Proposed Minister Swap
The Wildlife Animal Protection Forum South Africa (Wapfsa), the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA), and a coalition of groups including Blood Lions and Humane World for Animals South Africa, have all voiced their strong opposition. Their primary concern revolves around potential conflicts of interest.
Conflicts of Interest Alleged
Wapfsa argues that Willem Aucamp’s private interests could unduly influence state decision-making, potentially shaping laws to his own personal advantage. This complaint is endorsed by a wide array of organisations, including the EMS Foundation, Rhinos in Africa, and the Biodiversity Law Centre.
Wapfsa, representing 30 local organisations, emphasizes its long history of wildlife protection and conservation. The group also highlights its participation in the Ministerial Wildlife Well-Being Forum, established in May 2023. They believe that environmental protection, wildlife well-being, conservation, and core values like dignity and compassion are fundamental to South Africa's constitutional democracy.
Ambiguous Stance on Captive Lion Industry
The EMS Foundation, a founding member of Wapfsa, previously raised concerns about the DA's “ambiguous and contradictory messages” regarding the captive lion industry, including the controversial lion bone trade. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation, raising questions about the DA's commitment to animal welfare and environmental protection.
The future of Minister Dion George's position remains uncertain as President Ramaphosa considers these weighty concerns.
