Norton Rose Fulbright Shocker: SA Exit Looms! What's Next?

In a significant shift in the South African legal landscape, Norton Rose Fulbright SA has announced it will be separating from its global partner by the end of March 2026. This decision marks the end of a partnership spanning over a decade and will see the South African practice, with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, transition into an independent law firm.

Brent Botha, the current CEO of Norton Rose Fulbright SA, will continue to lead the newly independent entity. He emphasized the firm's commitment to serving clients across South Africa and the broader African continent. The firm will also continue to advise international clients investing in Africa and assist African businesses expanding internationally.

"We look forward to building on our 100-year legacy in SA and across Africa and to investing, innovating and evolving in line with the needs of our clients and people. We are proud of our heritage within Norton Rose Fulbright and look forward to working with the firm and other global partners, wherever our clients operate,” Botha stated.

It is highly anticipated that the South African business will revert to its original name, Deneys Reitz, which it operated under before merging with Norton Rose in 2011.

Peter Scott, co-global managing partner of Norton Rose Fulbright, clarified that this transition will not affect the operations of other Norton Rose Fulbright member firms. "This change represents a natural evolution for both firms as the dynamics of international markets and client needs progress worldwide. We thank our SA colleagues for their contributions."

What does this mean for South African clients?

The transition aims to provide a more tailored and responsive service to clients within the South African and African context. The independent firm, potentially operating as Deneys Reitz again, will likely focus on leveraging its deep understanding of the local market to offer specialized legal solutions.

Norton Rose Fulbright's African Presence

Norton Rose Fulbright maintains a presence in other African nations, including Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Burundi, and Zimbabwe, providing a full range of legal services to major corporations and financial institutions.

Looking Ahead

The legal sector in South Africa is dynamic and competitive. The separation of Norton Rose Fulbright SA presents both challenges and opportunities for the firm and its competitors. The success of the independent entity will depend on its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of the market and maintain its reputation for excellence.
