Gauteng Weather Update: Prepare for Lingering Cloud and Cold

Johannesburg, 17 November 2025 – Emergency services are urging residents and motorists in Gauteng to exercise extreme caution today as lingering inclement weather continues to pose risks. Following a weekend of severe storms and flooding across parts of South Africa, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) indicates that conditions are slowly improving. However, cloudy skies and cold temperatures are expected to persist in Gauteng.

Over the weekend, Gauteng and Mpumalanga were under severe weather warnings. While these have been lifted, less severe conditions remain for the Free State, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid submerged roads and bridges in these areas.

SAWS Forecaster's Outlook

According to SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela, "The warnings lasted up until last night, in terms of the orange levels, especially for the north-eastern parts. For today, cloudy conditions are expected to persist in the central and the eastern parts of the country with a yellow level 2 warning of disruptive rain, which is a high likelihood of minor impact."

He added, "Do take caution if you’re around the lowveld. But if you’ll be in Gauteng, expect it to be cloudy there, with cold temperatures, so we’ll see the decrease of more of the inclement weather, especially from tomorrow, as we’re not having much more of this adverse weather conditions.”
