As the chill of winter approaches, Ukraine receives a vital lifeline from Greece. A new agreement will see Greece supplying US-origin Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Kyiv, bolstering the country's energy reserves amid ongoing challenges to its infrastructure. This deal, running from December 2025 to March 2026, is a significant step in ensuring Ukraine can weather the coming months.
The agreement was cemented during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Athens, part of a broader European tour focused on securing energy supplies and strengthening Ukraine's defenses. Both Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed the deal as crucial for regional energy cooperation and European energy security.
The LNG is expected to be transported via 'Route 1', a collaborative effort by gas transmission system operators (TSOs) from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. This coordinated approach highlights the collective effort to support Ukraine and enhance energy resilience in the region.
Boosting European Energy Security
Konstantinos Xifaras, CEO of DEPA Commercial, emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating it represents a substantial contribution to regional energy cooperation. He highlighted the creation of an 'energy bridge' between Greece and Ukraine, supported by reliable infrastructure and promoting broader European energy resilience. The supply of US LNG will be facilitated through ATLANTIC–SEE, in which DEPA holds a significant stake, demonstrating their commitment to secure energy solutions across Southeast Europe.
Ukraine's Perspective
Sergii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz, expressed his gratitude, stating that the agreement opens another reliable import route for the upcoming winter. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to diversify supply routes and strengthen energy security for both Ukraine and the wider region. This agreement is crucial in guaranteeing stable heating for Ukrainians during the harsh winter months.
