However, this time, no Russian representative will be present in Ankara, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. While Putin isn't scheduled to speak directly with either the Turkish side or Witkoff, Peskov stated he remains open to dialogue.
Zelensky's European Tour
Ankara marks the fourth capital Zelensky has visited in recent days. He recently secured a gas deal in Athens, signed an agreement in Paris for up to 100 fighter jets, and held talks with Spanish arms manufacturers in Madrid. These visits underscore Zelensky's efforts to bolster European support for Ukraine as Russian attacks intensify, particularly around the key eastern city of Pokrovsk.
Domestic Challenges Mount
Adding to the pressure, Zelensky faces a significant domestic crisis. Several members of his inner circle are under investigation for alleged involvement in a large-scale criminal scheme, leading to the resignation of two ministers. This scandal threatens to widen, and EU leaders have warned Zelensky that he needs to do more to combat corruption, especially as they prepare to decide in December whether to unlock a substantial €140 billion loan for Kyiv funded by frozen Russian assets.
As the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion approaches in February 2022, fundamental disagreements persist between Moscow and Kyiv regarding the path to peace.
