SA's G20 Seat at Risk?! US Warning Sparks Outrage!

South Africa's G20 Status in Jeopardy?

Tensions are rising between South Africa and the United States as the Presidency issues a strong warning against any attempts to exclude South Africa from the upcoming G20 Summit in 2026. The warning comes amidst growing concerns that Washington may be considering sidelining Pretoria due to strained relations.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, emphasized that South Africa's role within the G20 Troika, which includes the current host (US), the next host (UK), and the previous host (South Africa), is non-negotiable. She asserted that any unilateral move to exclude South Africa would be unacceptable and would be brought to the attention of the international community.

"You cannot dilute the participation of others," Ntshavheni stated firmly. "If they do not want us to participate, we will have to tell the world that they do not want us to participate. The G20 is multilateral and not unilateral."

The Presidency reminded the US administration that decisions regarding G20 membership and participation cannot be made unilaterally. South Africa is expected to collaborate closely with both the US and the UK in the lead-up to the 2026 summit. However, the current climate of diplomatic tension could potentially complicate these collaborative efforts.

The situation raises questions about the future of South Africa's involvement in the G20 and the potential impact on the country's international standing. The South African government remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining its role within the G20 and will likely engage in diplomatic efforts to address the concerns raised by the United States.

What's at Stake?
