Madlanga Commission Faces Deadline Drama! What's Holding Up the Report?

The Madlanga Commission is facing significant challenges that could jeopardize its ability to submit its interim report within the stipulated three-month timeframe. Ongoing delays are disrupting the commission's schedule, raising concerns about the timely delivery of its findings.

Key Testimony Delayed

A crucial development is the postponement of Major-General Lesetja Senona's testimony. The KZN Hawks Head was initially slated to appear sooner, but will now testify on 27 January 2026. Evidence leader Mathew Chaskalson explained that the delay is to allow Senona ample time to submit his sworn statement by 16 January 2026.

Allegations Against Senona and His Son

Senona and his son, Thato, are at the centre of serious allegations. They are accused of maintaining a close and potentially beneficial relationship with Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is alleged to be a member of the notorious Big 5 cartel.

Former Hawks Boss Awaits Summons

Adding to the complexities, Godfrey Lebeya, the former Hawks Boss, has stated that he is still awaiting a summons from the Madlanga Commission. Lebeya is expected to address the controversial deployment of the Hawks to Katiso “KT” Molefe’s house on December 26. This deployment occurred during a political killings task team operation, raising concerns about potential interference.

Other Testimonies Postponed

The disruptions extend beyond Senona and Lebeya. Suspended EMPD commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi, who was scheduled to testify, will now only appear next week. Lieutenant General Hilda Senthumule is also expected to provide testimony regarding the 121 dockets associated with the political killings task team.

The commission is set to resume on Friday, where it hopes to regain momentum and address the mounting delays. The pressure is on to ensure the interim report is completed within the allotted time.
