Viral Video Shocks SA: Child Forced to Drink Alcohol! What Happens Next?

A disturbing video circulating online has sparked outrage across South Africa. The video depicts a young child being forced to drink what appears to be alcohol, prompting immediate concern and calls for action from community leaders and law enforcement.

The Viral Video: A Call to Action

The short clip, widely shared on social media, shows an adult man encouraging a young boy to pour beer from a bottle into a glass and consume it. The man can be heard egging the child on in Afrikaans, saying "swallow, swallow," before laughing as the child complies. The incident has been widely condemned as a clear case of child abuse.

Community Leaders Respond

Abie Isaacs of the Cape Flats Safety Forum has strongly condemned the incident, stating, "We are clearly concerned with the video circulating where it clearly illustrates a child that has been consuming alcohol. We call on the relevant departments, in particular the Department of Social Development and the Western Cape Child Commissioner's Office to look deeper into this particular matter."

Police Investigation and Child Safety

Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk has confirmed that a child abuse case has been registered at Mitchells Plain police station. The case has been transferred to the Mitchells Plain family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit for further investigation. In a swift response, four children, aged between 7 months and 11 years, were removed from the home by the Department of Social Development and placed in the care of safety parents. The children have undergone medical examinations.

Activist Concerns

Activist Zona Morton, who played a key role in alerting authorities, expressed concerns about the police's initial response, highlighting a potential systemic failure to act promptly in cases of child abuse. Morton emphasized the need for change and greater police accountability.

Community activist Lynn Philips of the Mitchell’s Plain Safety Forum assisted Morton in locating the family and contacting the police.

What Happens Now?

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure the safety and well-being of the children involved. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and prompt action in protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
