Fuel Price Shock! Petrol & Diesel Set to Rise AGAIN in December 2025!

Brace yourselves, South African motorists! After a brief respite in November, fuel prices are heading north once more in December 2025. Reports indicate that both petrol and diesel are expected to become more expensive next week, putting a strain on household budgets and businesses alike.

Why the Increase?

Data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) reveals that under-recoveries persisted throughout November, primarily due to rising global oil prices. While the Rand showed some strength, it wasn't enough to offset the impact of international oil market fluctuations. Specifically, Brent crude averaged $64.14 per barrel in November, influenced by shifting supply expectations and increased demand for winter heating in the northern hemisphere. This seasonal demand particularly affects diesel prices.

How Much More Will You Pay?

According to CEF projections, the price hikes are estimated as follows:

  • Petrol 93: +19c to +20c per litre
  • Petrol 95: +24c to +26c per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): +60c to +72c per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): +77c to +89c per litre
  • Illuminating paraffin: +68c per litre

Diesel Hit Hardest

Diesel users will feel the pinch the most, with increases significantly higher than those projected for petrol. This is largely due to the increased global demand for diesel during the northern hemisphere's winter months.

A Comparative Look

Despite the upcoming increase, the inland price for 95 Unleaded (R20.54) remains approximately 26c lower than it was in January 2025. However, diesel continues its upward trend, with 50ppm expected to be around 55c more expensive than at the start of the year. This underscores the ongoing volatility in the fuel market and its impact on South African consumers.
