The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is gearing up for a crucial elective conference in March 2026. This conference will determine the province's leadership as the party prepares for the 2026 local government elections. The early conference, pushed forward from its original May date, aims to align with the national executive committee (NEC) directives.
All eyes are on the potential leadership contest between current ANC chair Oscar Mabuyane, who is reportedly seeking a third term, and provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukaitobi. Speculation has been rife since early 2025 about Ngcukaitobi's challenge, creating a buzz within party structures. Sources indicate that both Mabuyane and Ngcukaitobi have strong support bases, setting the stage for a potentially fierce battle.
The confirmation of the March conference date followed a recent provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting. ANC provincial spokesperson Yanga Zicina stated that the PEC adopted a roadmap for both the 5th Amathole regional conference (March 20-22) and the provincial conference (March 27-30). The NEC resolution mandates all regional and provincial conferences be held before the end of March 2026, ahead of the local government elections.
Zicina emphasized the importance of unity and discipline within the party, stating, "there is no space for internal rifts, there is no space for odious agendas — there is only space for the collective discipline that places the ANC above individual considerations." The PEC is committed to ensuring the full participation of party structures in these pivotal gatherings.
The party is also focusing on resolving outstanding disputes lodged by aggrieved branches and preparations are well underway in other regions, such as the Buffalo City Metro's Dr WB Rubusana region, with preparations reportedly over 90% complete. The Eastern Cape ANC is determined to present a united front as it approaches the local government elections in 2026.
