MultiChoice, Africa's biggest pay-TV provider, is facing significant challenges as subscriber numbers dwindle, even as a takeover bid by French broadcaster Canal+ looms. The company reported a sharp decline in full-year earnings, citing tough economic conditions, foreign exchange losses, and increased competition from streaming services as major factors.

Subscriber Decline

The group revealed a loss of 1.2 million linear broadcasting subscribers, representing an 8% year-on-year decrease. The subscriber losses were evenly split between South Africa and the rest of Africa, indicating widespread pressure across the company's entire customer base. This follows a trend of declining subscriber numbers over the past two years, with a total loss of 2.8 million linear subscribers.

Economic Headwinds

MultiChoice attributed the decline to challenging macroeconomic factors impacting consumers across sub-Saharan Africa. A weak consumer spending environment, coupled with the rise of piracy, streaming services like Netflix, and social media, has materially affected the company's overall performance.

Financial Impact

The company's financial results reflect the challenging environment. MultiChoice experienced a more than 100% drop in full-year earnings. The depreciation of African currencies against the US dollar also negatively impacted the company's top line by R10.2 billion.

Canal+ Takeover

Despite the challenges, the proposed acquisition by Groupe Canal+ provides a potential lifeline for MultiChoice. Canal+'s cash offer of R125 per share has helped to support the MultiChoice share price. The completion of the sale remains a key focus for the company.

Looking Ahead

MultiChoice acknowledges the unprecedented headwinds it faces and is implementing measures to mitigate the impact, including cost-saving initiatives and price adjustments to keep pace with inflation. However, the company's future performance will depend on its ability to adapt to the changing media landscape and navigate the challenging economic environment.

The coming months will be crucial for MultiChoice as it navigates the Canal+ takeover and seeks to regain subscriber momentum in a highly competitive market.
