Apartheid Era Killer Finally Faces Justice

Johannesburg - The Pretoria High Court, sitting in Benoni, has finally delivered justice for the 1987 murder of student activist Caiphus Nyoka. Former apartheid police officer Johan Marais has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the brutal killing.

Nyoka, a prominent leader of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in Daveyton and a regional coordinator for Transco East Rand, was only 23 years old when he was gunned down in his home on August 24, 1987. Marais and a colleague broke into Nyoka's Daveyton residence and shot him multiple times.

Marais pleaded guilty to the murder in 2024, claiming the incident caused him severe emotional trauma. He was one of three men charged in connection with Nyoka's death. His co-accused, Leon Louis van den Berg and Abraham Engelbrecht, maintain their innocence. It is alleged that Nyoka was targeted by a police unit specifically created to eliminate individuals labelled as 'terrorists' by the apartheid regime.

The sentencing marks a significant moment for victims of apartheid-era violence and their families, demonstrating that even decades later, justice can still be served. The case also highlights the continued need for reconciliation and accountability for the crimes committed during this dark period in South Africa's history.
