Cape Town Prepares for Another Cold Front: Shelter Opens in Paarl

As the Western Cape gears up for another bout of icy weather this weekend, shelters province-wide are bracing themselves for an increase in demand. The Drakenstein Municipality has stepped up to the plate, announcing the opening of the Paarl Overnight shelter, offering refuge from the cold.

In collaboration with CRC Cares, a faith-based outreach initiative, the municipality is providing a safe space for those without homes. Geduld Veldsman, a senior social development officer at Drakenstein Municipality, stated that the shelter can accommodate 26 individuals each night. "Although providing shelter falls outside of our mandated responsibilities, we recognise the urgent need to respond to the plight of vulnerable individuals living on the streets," Veldsman explained. "Providing shelter isn't just about offering a bed; it's about restoring dignity and hope, and showing compassion."

CRC Cares will be responsible for the daily operations of the Paarl Overnight shelter. Residents will receive a warm meal, a bed with blankets, and access to comprehensive support services. These services include social services, as well as physical and emotional support, ensuring that individuals receive the holistic care they need during this challenging time.

This initiative highlights the importance of community collaboration in addressing social issues. By working together, the Drakenstein Municipality and CRC Cares are providing a vital service to the most vulnerable members of society during this cold spell. If you know someone in need of shelter, please direct them to the Paarl Overnight shelter.
