Western Cape Brace Yourselves! Another Big Chill is Coming!

The Western Cape is preparing for another onslaught of icy weather as a fierce cold front barrels in this Friday. Expect bone-chilling temperatures, torrential rain, and treacherous coastal conditions, according to Cape {town} Etc. The provincial Disaster Management Centre is on high alert and has issued urgent warnings.

News24 reports that temperatures are predicted to plummet below 10°C, accompanied by winds gusting up to 30kph. Widespread rainfall is expected across the entire region. MEC Anton Bredell has specifically cautioned about the dangers along the coast, with massive waves ranging from 4.5m to 5.5m. These waves pose a significant threat, capable of sweeping people off rocks, capsizing smaller vessels, and disrupting port operations.

The South African Weather Service has also extended its warnings to include the Namakwa district (Northern Cape), Witzenberg, Breede Valley, and Koue Bokkeveld.

Wave Warnings in Effect

  • A Yellow level 2 alert for damaging waves is currently in place from Hondeklip Bay to Plettenberg Bay until Saturday.
  • A Level 1 warning addresses the strong winds and waves affecting the area from Plettenberg Bay to Hamburg.

This latest cold front arrives just days after last weekend's devastating storms, which displaced approximately 10,000 people, according to Gift of the Givers. Many of these individuals, particularly those living in informal settlements, are still desperately in need of humanitarian assistance.

Residents are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm, avoid coastal areas altogether, and prepare for the possibility of flooding. Stay safe, Cape Town!
