South Africa, with its vibrant mix of cultures and languages, often throws up some hilarious surprises. The latest? The 'Human Biltong Kiosk' in Lephalale, which has tourists and even some locals doing a double-take! But fear not, biltong lovers, no humans are involved.

The Story Behind the Sign

Pieter and Annetjie Human, the owners of the kiosk, have been running the business for 25 years. The name? Simply their Afrikaans surname, Human (pronounced 'he-mun'). According to Pieter, they never anticipated the fuss it would cause.

“My wife Annetjie and I opened the kiosk 25 years ago. We never even thought the name would create a fuss—it was just our surname,” the 84-year-old Pieter Human told TimesLIVE Premium.

Tourist Reactions are Priceless

Located near a filling station on the road to Polokwane and Botswana, the kiosk attracts a lot of attention, especially from international tourists visiting a nearby curio shop. Pieter hilariously describes the reactions:

"You should see the Americans who visit the curio shop. Their eyes nearly pop out. Every one of them gets out of the Kombi, stretches, and glances across the road in our direction. Then their eyes go wide, and they grab their camera bags. They always use long lenses to take pictures of the sign—too scared to come any closer," he said.

What's on the Menu? (Definitely Not Human!)

So, what *do* they sell? Forget any cannibalistic notions! The Human Biltong Kiosk offers a delicious array of traditional South African dried meats, including:

  • Yellow fat biltong
  • Liver sausage
  • Boerewors
  • Chilli bites
  • Dry wors
  • Biltong sticks

Pieter assures everyone that no "humans" or "Humans" are harmed in the making of their tasty biltong!

Next time you're driving through Lephalale, be sure to stop by the Human Biltong Kiosk. Just remember, it's all about the surname!
