Cape Town is cracking down hard on unlicensed drivers! A recent enforcement operation has uncovered a shockingly high number of motorists driving without valid licenses, raising serious concerns about road safety in the Mother City. According to reports, traffic officers issued a staggering 49,687 fines for various traffic violations in just one week.

Unlicensed Driving: A Major Problem

During a single roadblock in the CBD on July 25th, a staggering 54 motorists were caught driving without a valid driver's licence. JP Smith, the City’s Safety and Security MMC, expressed deep concern over these findings, stating, 'It’s alarming to realise how many people are driving without valid licenses or proof of a valid licence. Officers are duty-bound to enforce the law, and unlicensed drivers pose a serious risk to themselves and others.'

No Excuses: Physical Licence Required

Authorities are also making it clear that digital copies of driver’s licenses are not acceptable as proof of legality. 'Presentation of a driver’s license card is the only way to prove you are behind the wheel legally,' Smith emphasised. Motorists are urged to always carry their physical licence. If it's lost or stolen, make sure to have proof of a replacement application while driving.

Beyond Unlicensed Drivers: Other Violations

The week-long enforcement campaign also saw significant action taken against other traffic violations:

  • 1,845 warrants executed
  • 239 public transport vehicles impounded
  • Emergency services dispatched to 41 vehicle and pedestrian accidents

Public Transport Under Scrutiny

The high number of impounded public transport vehicles highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing road regulations within this sector. Authorities continue to stress that driving without a valid licence not only risks hefty fines but also endangers lives.

With enforcement efforts intensifying, motorists are strongly urged to ensure they meet all legal requirements before getting behind the wheel. Stay safe on the roads!
