Lions vs WP: Province Coach Expects Improvement in Joburg Showdown!
DHL Western Province coach Labeeb Levy is optimistic about his team's chances as they head to Johannesburg for their Carling Currie Cup clash against the ADT Lions this Saturday. Despite a tough loss against the Vodacom Bulls last week, Levy saw significant improvement in the second half and is keeping changes to the squad minimal.
Last week's defeat at DHL Stadium saw WP struggle against a more experienced Bulls side. The Bulls dominated the forward exchanges, forcing WP into errors that resulted in penalties and cards. WP found themselves down to 13 men at one point, allowing the Bulls to build a substantial lead.
However, WP's focus remains on developing individual players during this competition. The team showed glimpses of promise in the second half, and Levy is hoping to build on that momentum. Replacement wing Sako Matata impressed and has earned a starting spot on the right wing this week.
There are a few changes to the lineup. Jared Africa comes in on the left wing, while Zachary Porthen, last year's Junior Bok captain, starts at tighthead. Gideon van Wyk takes over at blindside flank. Louw Nel, who has Vodacom United Rugby Championship experience, moves from No7 to No8.
Instead of bringing in a large number of Junior Boks, Levy has opted for continuity. Gino Cupido joins the bench, and the coach hopes that the team's growing experience playing together will be an advantage against a strong Lions team that dominated the Sharks XV in their first match. Levy is backing his charges to step up and deliver a much-improved performance in Joburg.
