Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has lauded new signing Abdoulaye Mariko after his debut in the MTN8 quarter-final victory over Polokwane City. The 23-year-old Malian forward, arriving from Djoliba AC with both the Mali Ligue 1 Player of the Season and Golden Boot awards under his belt, showed glimpses of his potential in the black and white.

"Mariko is a very interesting player, a young player," Ouaddou stated. "He was the top scorer in Mali. He was the best player as well. He took the awards of the best player and the top scorer. He came in a new environment at a big club. He has a lot of qualities like maybe you’ve seen today."

However, Ouaddou emphasized that Mariko's adaptation to South African football is just beginning. He stressed the importance of integration, particularly learning English, for Mariko's development at the club.

"He still needs to improve and get to the high level. It’s not easy when you come into a new country with a new culture," Ouaddou explained. "It’s what I told him. The first thing that he has to do is to learn English in order to integrate himself into the team. That’s very important."

Despite the language barrier and the challenges of a new environment, Ouaddou remains optimistic about Mariko's future at Orlando Pirates. "The expectations for him are like all the players — to give his best and to be the best for Orlando [Pirates], because there is a lot of expectation in the country, and even outside the country. He knows that. I think he is a top man."

Key Takeaways for Mariko's Success:

  • Overcoming challenges pointed out by the coach.
  • Integrating into the team and South African culture.
  • Learning English to improve communication.

What's Next for Mariko?

All eyes will be on Mariko as he continues to adjust to the PSL. Can he live up to the high expectations and become a key player for the Buccaneers? Only time will tell.
