Registered Sex Offender Banned From Spirit Airlines After Groping Teenage Passenger

A 65-year-old registered sex offender is facing serious federal charges after allegedly groping a sleeping teenager on a Spirit Airlines flight. The incident has resulted in the individual being permanently banned from flying with the airline.

John Daniel Fowler, an Indiana resident, is accused of assaulting a 17-year-old girl during a flight from Indianapolis to Orlando. According to an FBI affidavit, Fowler initially caused a disturbance at the gate due to a luggage fee dispute, even allegedly stating he hoped the plane would crash before later apologising and being allowed to board.

Following the incident, Fowler claimed he was merely trying to help the teenager by righting her thermos after it tipped over. However, authorities have proceeded with charges based on the teenager's account and other evidence.

Spirit Airlines has taken swift action, declaring Fowler persona non grata. A spokesperson stated, "Safety is our top priority, and we have zero tolerance for the behavior as alleged. The allegations are serious, and we will provide any necessary assistance to law enforcement in their investigation. Additionally, this individual is no longer welcome on any of our flights."

Fowler's past includes a guilty plea for molesting his step-nephew’s girlfriend, requiring him to register with authorities until November 2033. He now faces significant prison time if convicted of the current charges. He has not yet been able to be reached for comment and does not have a lawyer listed on court documents.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding passenger safety on airlines and the measures being taken to address such issues.

Airline's Response

  • Spirit Airlines has banned the individual from all future flights.
  • The airline is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation.
  • They have reiterated their commitment to passenger safety.
