The Los Angeles Rams' offseason decision to sign wide receiver Tutu Atwell to a one-year, fully guaranteed $10 million contract raised eyebrows. Now, just a few games into the 2025 season, questions are swirling around whether this investment will pay off. While some view it as a potential misstep, Rams coaches maintain Atwell's value extends beyond the stat sheet.

The Atwell Enigma: Speed vs. Production

Atwell, drafted in the second round in 2021, was envisioned as a game-changing receiver. However, his on-field impact has been limited. Through three games this season, he has just one reception for four yards. This is despite the expectation that he would step into a larger role at WR3.

Coaches Defend Atwell's Value

Despite the underwhelming numbers, Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur insists Atwell is “extremely valuable.” LaFleur argues that Atwell's speed commands attention from defenses, creating opportunities for other receivers. He stated, “Tutu's doing everything that's being asked within the framework of each and every single play… I do think he's been extremely valuable in other ways right now and in the pass game because of the threat that he poses.”

McVay's Perspective: A Matter of Opportunity

Head coach Sean McVay echoed LaFleur's sentiments, praising Atwell's professionalism and work ethic. When questioned about Atwell's limited involvement, McVay explained, “He’s doing what he can control… Ultimately, our job is to play the game how it unfolds… I want to try to be able to figure out a way to get him involved.” He also acknowledged the challenge of maximizing everyone's involvement with only one football to go around.

The Road Ahead for Atwell

Atwell is currently splitting time with Jordan Whittington behind star receivers Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. With Nacua and Adams dominating targets, Atwell's opportunities have been scarce. The coaches remain optimistic that Atwell's time will come. Only time will tell if the Rams' $10 million gamble on Tutu Atwell will ultimately prove to be a worthwhile investment.
