Apple Unleashes AI Power for Developers at WWDC 2025
Cupertino, CA – Apple has unveiled a suite of powerful new tools and technologies designed to empower developers and foster a new era of intelligent, engaging app experiences across its ecosystem. The announcements, made at WWDC 2025, showcase Apple's commitment to providing developers with the resources they need to build the next generation of innovative applications.
Apple Intelligence: Core to the Developer Experience
A key highlight is the integration of Apple Intelligence across Apple platforms. Developers will gain access to the on-device Apple Intelligence model, allowing them to create apps that leverage AI capabilities directly on the device, ensuring user privacy and optimizing performance. Xcode 26 will also integrate large language models (LLMs), offering developers intelligent coding tools and features, similar to ChatGPT, directly within their development environment.
“Developers play a vital role in shaping the experiences customers love across Apple platforms,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. “These new tools and technologies are designed to supercharge their creativity and enable them to build truly remarkable apps.”
Foundation Models and Enhanced APIs
The introduction of the Foundation Models framework allows developers to tap into on-device intelligence, opening up a wealth of possibilities for creating AI-powered features. Apple is also opening its LLM to third-party developers, enabling them to build on Apple Intelligence and create new, intelligent experiences that are available offline and prioritize user privacy.
Alongside these AI advancements, Apple continues to expand its extensive library of APIs, now boasting over 250,000, allowing developers to seamlessly integrate their apps with Apple's hardware and software features. These APIs cover a wide range of capabilities, including machine learning, augmented reality, health and fitness, spatial computing, and high-performance graphics.
New AI Features Across Apple Platforms
Apple also announced several new AI features that will be integrated into its core apps, including live translation, visual search, and a workout assistant. Apple Intelligence will also enhance apps like Reminders, Messages, and Apple Wallet. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, emphasized the company's commitment to delivering intelligent features that are helpful, relevant, easy to use, and privacy-focused.
A Race to Catch Up?
While Apple's AI announcements at WWDC 2025 are significant, some analysts suggest they represent an effort to catch up in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence market. The opening of Foundation Models aims to encourage the development of new AI features and apps, potentially accelerating Apple's progress in this area.
Alex Kantrowitz, founder of the Big Technology podcast and newsletter, noted that while Apple had a “big vision announcement” last year, progress has been slower than anticipated. However, with these new tools and technologies, Apple is empowering developers to drive innovation and create the next generation of AI-powered applications.
