Delawareans Get Utility Bill Relief Through New Energy Assistance Program
Delaware residents struggling with rising utility bills are set to receive much-needed relief thanks to a new program announced by Governor Matt Meyer, Delmarva Power, and the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility. The agreement will provide nearly $6.5 million in support to income-eligible households through utility bill credits and energy efficiency improvements.
The initiative focuses on expanding the Home Energy Check-Up and Counseling Program (HEC²). This expansion will not only deliver immediate utility bill credits to eligible households but also invest in long-term energy efficiency upgrades aimed at reducing energy costs over time.
"Today, the State of Delaware is proud to announce a meaningful step forward for Delaware families," stated Governor Meyer. "Through a renewed partnership between the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) and Delmarva Power, we are proud to announce the expansion of the Home Energy Check-Up & Counseling Program (HEC²). This expansion will deliver immediate utility bill credits to eligible households, but it will also invest in long-term energy efficiency improvements that reduce costs over time."
Importantly, Governor Meyer emphasized that the costs associated with this program will not be passed on to customers.
The state estimates that nearly 20,000 Delawareans could benefit from this one-time injection of funds. Eligibility for the program extends to applicants earning up to 350% of the federal poverty level and who are currently delinquent on their energy bills.
“This is a win for the people of Delaware. At a time when energy prices have stretched household budgets through both winter and summer, this agreement will bring nearly $6.5 million in total relief and energy-saving support to our communities — without shifting any of the cost burden onto customers,” Meyer said. “Together, we’re building a more resilient, energy-efficient Delaware — one where no one is left behind.”
Delmarva Power representatives have clarified that the funding for this initiative is made possible through a one-time donation from Exelon, Delmarva Power’s parent company, in partnership with the State of Delaware.
Applications for the program are scheduled to open in July. Residents are encouraged to visit the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility website or contact Delmarva Power directly for more information about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
