The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired forward Andre Burakovsky from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for forward Joe Veleno, both teams announced on Saturday. This trade sees a two-time Stanley Cup winner heading to Chicago, while Veleno gets a fresh start in Seattle.

Burakovsky's Performance and Contract

Burakovsky, 30, recorded 37 points (10 goals, 27 assists) in 79 games with the Kraken this season. A veteran of 696 NHL games, he boasts 387 points (153 goals, 234 assists) across his career with the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, and Kraken. He also brings significant playoff experience with 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) in 93 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018 and Colorado in 2022.

Burakovsky is currently under a five-year, $27.5 million contract with an average annual value of $5.5 million, which he signed with Seattle in 2022. He has two seasons remaining on his current deal.

Veleno's Opportunity with the Kraken

Veleno, 25, had 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists) in 74 games this season split between the Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. He was traded to Chicago by Detroit earlier this year. Selected by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Draft, Veleno has accumulated 81 points (38 goals, 43 assists) in 306 NHL games. He has one season left on his two-year, $4.55 million contract before becoming a restricted free agent.

What this Means for the Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are adding a seasoned player in Burakovsky, hoping he can bolster their offensive depth and provide valuable experience to their younger core. The team previously added veterans like Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teravainen, and this move appears to continue that strategy.

Kraken Seeking a Spark with Veleno

The Kraken are betting on Veleno's potential to contribute more consistently. While his numbers haven't been outstanding, a change of scenery could unlock his offensive abilities and provide a much-needed spark.

This trade marks a significant shift for both players and teams, offering new opportunities for growth and contribution in the upcoming seasons.
