Hoërskool Roodepoort Principal Stabbed During School Violence

A shocking incident at Hoërskool Roodepoort has left the school community reeling after a violent clash resulted in the principal being stabbed and several pupils injured. The Gauteng Department of Education is investigating the incident, which involved students from nearby West Ridge High School.

According to reports, the altercation stemmed from a previous incident between pupils from the two schools on Friday. The situation escalated on Monday when a group of West Ridge learners allegedly sought revenge, storming Hoërskool Roodepoort and attacking learners. Cars were also pelted with stones during the chaos.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, stated that the principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort was stabbed on her hand while trying to diffuse the situation and was immediately taken to hospital. She has since been discharged. Tragically, three learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

“It is completely unacceptable that such violence has spilled into our schools,” condemned Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane. “Our schools must remain centres of safety, learning, and growth, not battlegrounds.”

The department has taken swift action, serving suspension letters to six Grade 12 boys from West Ridge High School. These boys will be suspended for seven days pending their appearance before a disciplinary committee. To enhance security, the department has engaged SAPS Roodepoort to support both schools and conduct unannounced search-and-seizure operations.

The incident has raised serious concerns about safety in schools and the need for proactive measures to prevent future violence. The Gauteng Department of Education has vowed to take a firm stance against violence and intimidation in schools, ensuring that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the violence and identify all those involved. The department is working closely with both schools and the SAPS to ensure the safety and well-being of all learners and educators.
