NC State Bounces Back! Wolfpack Tames Pirates in Thrilling Opener!
RALEIGH, NC - NC State Wolfpack clawed their way to a 24-17 victory against the East Carolina Pirates in a nail-biting season opener at Carter-Finley Stadium. After a dominant first half, NC State had to dig deep to hold off a late Pirates surge, securing the win with a crucial fourth-down stop in the final minute.
Wolfpack Defense Stands Tall
The Wolfpack defense, eager to redeem themselves after last year's Military Bowl loss to ECU, put on a stellar performance, limiting the Pirates to a mere 30 rushing yards. Defensive backs Jamel Johnson and Ronnie Royal III combined to make the game-winning stop, preventing ECU from reaching the end zone.
"This game was about getting our identity back and playing hard, tough, together football," said NC State coach Dave Doeren.
Offensive Highlights for NC State
CJ Bailey led the Wolfpack offense, throwing for 318 yards and a touchdown. Wesley Grimes had a career-best performance, hauling in 121 receiving yards and a touchdown. Hollywood Smothers also contributed with a rushing touchdown.
Pirates' Comeback Falls Short
Despite trailing by 17 points, the East Carolina Pirates mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Katin Houser threw for 366 yards and a touchdown, but miscues and a strong NC State defense ultimately sealed their fate.
"There was some obviously Game 1 things, but you don’t want it to happen against a good football team and get your tail beat like we did tonight,” said ECU coach Blake Harrell.
- NC State avenges Military Bowl loss.
- Wolfpack defense shines.
- Wesley Grimes has career day.
NC State will look to build on this victory as they head into Week 2, while East Carolina will seek to rebound from their opening loss.
