Huddersfield Town defender Josh Feeney is brimming with confidence, predicting a potential EFL Trophy victory for the Terriers. This comes as Huddersfield Town U21s delivered a resounding 6-2 defeat to Newcastle United U21s in their opening Northern Group F fixture.

Feeney's Confidence Boost

Feeney, on loan from Aston Villa, believes Huddersfield can end their 104-year wait for a cup competition win. He highlighted the team's promising start to their League One campaign as a key factor in their ambitious outlook.

"We all think we can win [the EFL Trophy] and we should win as well," Feeney told BBC Radio Leeds. "We're all ready every game. We'll be on it and looking to win."

He also acknowledged the importance of the match for the Newcastle United U21s players. "These are the biggest games for [the under-21s] lads, so they'll come here really excited, a bit nervous but ready for this game and we need to be the same because we want to win this competition and we think we can."

The young Magpies suffered a heavy defeat at the Accu Stadium. Jack Whatmough's early header and Marcus Harness' penalty put Huddersfield in control. Despite Sean Neave pulling a goal back for Newcastle, Leo Castledine restored Huddersfield's two-goal lead before half-time.

Second Half Onslaught

Huddersfield continued their dominance in the second half, scoring three goals in the opening seven minutes. Joe Taylor's brace and Charlie McArthur's own goal extended their advantage. Dylan Charlton's late goal was merely a consolation for Newcastle.

  • Whatmough opened the scoring with a header from a corner.
  • Harness converted a penalty after Heffernan fouled Castledine.
  • Taylor scored two quick goals in the second half.

Adam Lawrence's first game as Newcastle's U21s Lead Coach ended in disappointment, while Huddersfield will be buoyed by their performance as they look ahead in the EFL Trophy.
