Rory's Ryder Cup Boost: Taking Tips From Tennis Ace Djokovic!
Rory McIlroy believes the European Ryder Cup team can draw inspiration from Novak Djokovic's mental fortitude when facing potentially hostile crowds at Bethpage Black. The Northern Irishman highlighted Djokovic's ability to handle intense pressure and partisan support, suggesting the team could benefit from adopting a similar approach.
Djokovic's Pep Talk & Courtside Support
Djokovic, a keen golfer himself, previously delivered a pep talk to the European team before their victory in Rome. McIlroy was also spotted supporting Djokovic at the US Open, just hours after finishing the Tour Championship. This connection underscores the potential for cross-sport learning and mental preparation.
Bethpage Black Beckons: A Raucous Atmosphere Awaits
McIlroy anticipates a "raucous" home crowd at Bethpage Black and believes that channeling energy positively, as Djokovic does, will be crucial. He emphasises the importance of controlling reactions and emotions, minimizing the impact of external pressures on their performance.
Team Europe: Accomplished and Ready
McIlroy expressed his confidence in the team assembled by captain Luke Donald, highlighting their experience and accomplishments. He noted that many team members are even more accomplished than they were during their 2023 victory. Continuity within the team is also seen as a valuable asset, especially given the inherent variables of the Ryder Cup.
- Eleven of the twelve players from the previous Ryder Cup winning team will participate.
- Rasmus Hojgaard replaced his twin brother Nicolai.
McIlroy acknowledged the difficulty of winning an away Ryder Cup, noting that the home team has won every Ryder Cup for the past decade. However, he remains optimistic, stating that Team Europe has a "wonderful opportunity" to defy the odds and achieve something "very, very special".
He will be playing in his eighth Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black from 26-28 September.
