Croatia Clash! Can the Faroe Islands Upset World Cup Hopefuls?
Faroe Islands vs. Croatia: David vs. Goliath in World Cup Qualifying
Croatia's quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues as they face the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn. While the Vatreni are clear favourites, coach Zlatko Dalić insists there's no room for complacency. Kick-off is set for 20:45.
Croatia started their Group L campaign strongly in June, with dominant wins against Gibraltar (7-0) and Czechia (5-1). Having secured silver and bronze medals in the last two World Cups, expectations are high.
"We have full respect for our opponent," Dalić stated. "Every match is important, and this one is the most important for us right now. The Faroe Islands do not have the same quality as us, but they are disciplined and showed their strength against Montenegro and Czechia. We are not expecting an easy match."
Several key players, including Mateo Kovačić, Joško Gvardiol, and Josip Stanišić, are unavailable for the match. Josip Juranović is also struggling with an injury. Despite these absences, Dalić emphasised the need for focus and adaptability.
Croatia's Strategy: Patience and Precision
"We cannot afford to underestimate anyone. We must watch out for long balls and set-pieces. Matches like this can be very tricky – there is not much to gain, but a lot to lose," Dalić warned.
Captain Luka Modrić is expected to lead the team, showcasing Croatia's ability to adapt to different playing styles. Defender Marin Pongračić echoed the coach's sentiments, highlighting the team's determination to secure three points.
"We came here for three points. The conditions are different to what we are used to, but we are highly motivated. Every minute is important to me, and I hope to make the most of my opportunity," Pongračić said.
Faroe Islands: A Tough Test Despite Underdog Status
While the Faroe Islands may be considered underdogs, their disciplined approach and resilience against teams like Montenegro and Czechia suggest they won't be pushovers. Croatia will need to be patient and precise to secure the victory and continue their journey towards the 2026 World Cup.
