Malawi's World Cup Hopes on the Line Against Liberia

The Malawi national football team, known as the Flames, are set to face Liberia in a crucial World Cup qualifier. Head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has confirmed that key player Yankho Singo will miss the match, and winger Chikumbutso Salima is doubtful due to illness. However, there's good news as goalkeeper William Thole has recovered and is available for selection.

Malawi currently sits fifth in Group H with nine points, following a 2-1 victory over Namibia. With only a few matches left, every point is vital for their chances of progressing. Tunisia leads the group with 19 points, followed by Namibia (12), Liberia (10), Equatorial Guinea (10), Malawi (9), and São Tomé and Príncipe (0).

Pasuwa's Pre-Match Thoughts

Speaking to the media, Pasuwa emphasized the importance of the match, stating that the team has settled in well. Players who didn't feature in the previous game had an extra training session. Despite winning the first leg against Liberia away from home, Pasuwa warned against complacency.

"We beat them away, but now they’re coming here. We must stay focused and mentally prepared, this is not the time to experiment," he said.

Pasuwa acknowledged the team's struggles with finishing, urging patience and composure in attacking positions. He also highlighted ongoing defensive issues, particularly conceding from crosses. He attributed this to limited training time for focused repetition.

Team Building Challenges

Pasuwa admitted that frequent squad changes across various competitions (CHAN, COSAFA, AFCON, and World Cup qualifiers) have complicated team building. However, he expressed satisfaction with the gradual improvements and the integration of new players like Malango Mayele.

With Malawi just three points behind second-placed Namibia, Pasuwa stressed the importance of tactical discipline. "We can’t go all out," he noted, implying a cautious approach is needed to secure a positive result.

This match is a must-win for Malawi if they want to keep their World Cup qualification dreams alive. The pressure is on for the Flames to deliver a strong performance in front of their home fans.
