Tensions are running high as Serbia prepares to host England in a crucial World Cup 2026 qualifier. The match is set against a backdrop of warnings against racist chanting and potential UEFA sanctions for the Serbian FA (FSS).

Serbia Calls for Good Behaviour

The FSS has urged its supporters to display exemplary behaviour, emphasizing the need to avoid any incidents that could further penalize the nation. At least 15% of Belgrade's Rajko Mitic Stadium will be closed to home fans as a FIFA punishment for past racist chanting. Branko Radujko, the general secretary of the FSS, stressed that any inappropriate actions could jeopardize Serbia's World Cup aspirations.

"We are still under special monitoring of Uefa," he wrote. "Every inappropriate reaction, insult or incident could cost us dearly on our path to the USA, Mexico and Canada... Let us cheer from the heart but let it be fair. We can be loud but dignified."

England Prepared for Potential Racism

England captain Harry Kane has stated that the team is prepared to follow UEFA protocols should any racist abuse occur. "We had a meeting and discussed the Uefa protocols that are in place... Our focus is on the game. Anything can happen but we are not thinking about that."

Kane added, "We are prepared to do what Uefa protocols allow us to do. I thought we handled it well in Bulgaria [in 2019]. We are prepared, had a discussion and if it [racist abuse] does happen we will be prepared to do what is necessary."

Predictions Point to a Tight Match

Experts predict a low-scoring affair in Belgrade. England, despite winning their previous matches, have shown signs of sluggishness under Thomas Tuchel. Serbia, undefeated in their qualifying campaign and solid defensively, will pose a significant challenge.
