André de Ruyter has issued a stark warning: South Africa is facing a crisis reminiscent of the pre-1994 era. Speaking to BusinessTech, he highlighted economic stagnation, escalating debt, and increasing social instability as factors pushing the country dangerously close to the edge.

"South Africa is in crisis," De Ruyter stated, painting a grim picture of civil unrest, pervasive crime, and alarmingly frequent political murders. He drew a parallel to 1989, when economic collapse and international isolation compelled the apartheid government to initiate change. He urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to make equally decisive moves.

Daily Investor reported that De Ruyter described South Africa as the world's most unequal nation, with soaring unemployment fueling desperation and driving skilled young professionals to seek opportunities abroad. "Sadly, our talented young people see little chance of making their future in this country. An ever greater number head for more stable and lucrative destinations, depriving South Africa of much-needed talent for growing our economy," he lamented.

He also pointed to geopolitical tensions, particularly strained relations with the United States, and internal issues such as political interference in policing and unsettling rumors of military unrest.

Despite the daunting challenges, De Ruyter expressed hope, citing South Africa's past ability to overcome crises, such as the improvements in living standards, employment, and social grants following 1994. He outlined potential reforms for Ramaphosa's 2026 State of the Nation Address, including a means-tested empowerment system targeting the poorest South Africans and a renewed focus on anti-corruption measures. Can South Africa heed De Ruyter's warning and avert a potential collapse?
