Are you tired of endless queues at the Sassa Benoni office? You're not alone. Snaking lines forming before dawn have become a painful reality for many, especially mothers with babies, the elderly, and people with disabilities. But there's hope! Sassa officials have finally implemented a new schedule to better manage the flow of applicants.
Here's the New Sassa Benoni Office Schedule:
- Old Age Grants: Monday and Tuesday
- Child Support Grants: Wednesday and Thursday
- Foster Care and Disability Grants: Friday
Ward 27 Councillor Lornette Joseph recently visited the office with MP Bridget Masango, chairperson of the portfolio committee on social development, after receiving numerous complaints about the unbearable waiting times and conditions.
Unacceptable Conditions
“Residents from Benoni, Daveyton, Etwatwa, Mayfield, Actonville, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Edenvale, and Bedfordview rely on services offered at the local office, waiting for hours in a space that offers no seating, cover from the elements, or access to bathroom facilities,” Joseph stated. “This is not only inconvenient but undignified and unacceptable.”
Overwhelmed and Under-Resourced
According to Joseph, the office’s 21 officials struggle to serve hundreds of clients daily, with each staff member attending to an average of 20 to 30 individuals. She believes the current system is deeply flawed and unsustainable, leaving vulnerable community members waiting in unsafe conditions.
Joseph plans to launch a petition to the provincial and national governments, requesting more Sassa offices across Ekurhuleni, additional trained staff to reduce backlogs, and basic amenities like seating and shelter for beneficiaries. Let's hope these changes bring relief to those who need it most!
