Richards Bay is FINALLY Home! End of 3-Year Exile!
After years of waiting, Richards Bay is finally playing a home game! They're hosting TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership this Wednesday at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex. It marks the end of a long three-season exile from their home ground.
For the past three seasons, Richards Bay has had to play all 55 of their 'home' matches in Durban. This was due to delays in upgrading their local municipality's stadium to meet top-flight football standards. The upgrades were finally completed after three long years.
Recent inspections by Premier Soccer League officials have given the stadium the green light. However, the poor state of the pitch caused the postponement of two planned homecomings against Marumo Gallants and Chippa United in recent weeks. These matches were initially scheduled at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex but were moved to Durban at the last minute.
Previously, Richards Bay used Umlazi for 53 home games. They also hosted a cup game against Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the 2023-24 season. Their last home fixture against Chippa United last month took place at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
Currently, Richards Bay sits in 11th place with four points from their opening five Betway Premiership games. This is after a slower start compared to the 2024-25 season, where they surprised everyone by finishing eighth.
Richards Bay isn't alone in facing stadium issues. Newcomers Orbit College also had to relocate their first home games from Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg to Dobsonville in Soweto.
