KZN Heritage Day: Weather Warning! Don't Get Caught in the Storm!
Heads up, KwaZulu-Natal! Heritage Day celebrations might need a slight adjustment this year. The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for disruptive weather, potentially impacting braais, family gatherings, and those planned road trips.
Severe Weather Alert for KZN
A yellow level 2 alert is in effect for severe thunderstorms across the south-western parts of the province on Tuesday. Expect heavy rain and strong winds as a cold front moves through, following its impact on Cape Town.
The weather service is predicting an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers. Separate warnings have been issued: a yellow level 2 for disruptive rainfall in the south-western areas, and a yellow level 4 for central, northern, and eastern regions of KZN.
Snow Possible! Remember the N3 Tragedy
Adding to the mix, there's a chance of snow, especially in areas like Van Reenen's Pass. This brings back memories of the tragic snowstorm on the N3 almost a year ago, where one person lost their life and hundreds were stranded. Be extra cautious in these areas.
Stay Safe This Heritage Day: Key Tips
Here's how to stay safe and enjoy your Heritage Day despite the weather:
- Check the Forecast: Before you head out, get the latest weather updates from the South African Weather Service. Conditions can change rapidly, particularly in mountainous regions.
- Reduce Speed and Increase Following Distance: Wet and icy roads significantly increase stopping distances. Drive slower than usual, especially on mountain passes.
- Avoid Unnecessary Travel: If severe warnings are issued for areas like Van Reenen’s Pass or the Drakensberg, consider postponing your trip.
- Don't Stop in Unsafe Locations: If conditions worsen, pull over at a petrol station or designated safe area. Avoid stopping on the roadside where visibility is poor.
Stay informed, stay safe, and have a happy Heritage Day, KZN!
