Braga is facing a housing crunch, and the Alternativa Democrática Nacional (ADN) party is proposing a radical solution: prioritise housing for Portuguese nationals, especially young couples. Francisco Pimentel Torres, ADN's mayoral candidate, believes this is key to boosting the birth rate and tackling Braga's housing woes.

Putting 'Portuguese First' in Housing

Torres argues that Portuguese citizens should be first in line for public housing. He plans to incentivise construction and controlled-cost rentals to increase supply and drive down prices through competition.

No More Social Housing 'Ghettos'

ADN is “totally against” building more social housing estates, claiming they create “ghettos and dens of marginality and drugs.” Instead, Torres advocates for stricter enforcement of rent payments in existing social housing. He points out that Braga is owed €817,000 in unpaid rent from 307 families. He argues that those who consistently fail to pay should be evicted to make way for others.

Cracking Down on Illegal Subletting

The party also aims to stop subletting and the business of social housing, prohibiting sales for 20 years. Furthermore, ADN wants to increase inspections of housing conditions, particularly for immigrants, targeting overcrowded apartments, illegal rentals, and dormitories in shops.

Focus on Seniors

In addition to housing, Torres emphasizes the need for more day centers and activities for seniors in Braga. He criticizes the current administration for a lack of progress and unfulfilled promises, including projects like Sete Fontes and the Nó de Infias.

“Braga needs more day centers and activities for seniors,” says Torres, highlighting the importance of caring for the elderly population.

Addressing Braga's Stagnation

Torres believes Braga has stagnated under the current leadership, failing to prepare for growth. He criticizes the lack of new projects and unfulfilled promises from previous electoral campaigns. He aims to revitalize the city with a focus on housing, senior care, and overall urban development.
