Coco Gauff's China Open title defence ended in a shocking upset as she was demolished by Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals. Anisimova needed a mere 58 minutes to dispatch the second seed with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory. This win propels Anisimova into her third career WTA 1000 final, marking her second consecutive final appearance after finishing as runner-up at the recent US Open.

A Nightmare on the Court for Gauff

Gauff narrowly avoided being “bagelled” in both sets, managing to save set points while trailing 0-5 in the first set and breaking back as Anisimova served for the match. Despite these brief glimmers of resistance, it was undeniably a disastrous day for the reigning champion in Beijing, compounded by five double faults.

This was the third career meeting between Gauff and Anisimova, but their first encounter on a hard court. Gauff previously triumphed in Parma four years ago, while Anisimova secured a victory at Wimbledon in 2022.

Anisimova's Resurgence

Since their last meeting, Gauff has ascended to become a two-time Major winner, claiming the US Open title in 2023 and the French Open trophy earlier this year. Meanwhile, Anisimova has experienced a remarkable breakthrough season. She secured her biggest career title at the WTA 1000 in Doha back in February and reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open this summer.

Anisimova has continued her impressive form from Flushing Meadows, storming into another final, this time in Beijing. Her powerful game proved too much for Gauff, whose serving struggles continued to plague her performance. Anisimova now advances to the China Open final, showcasing her dominance on the court.
