Mozambique's World Cup qualification hopes hang in the balance as they prepare to face Guinea at the Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo. The crucial match is set to kick off at 6pm CAT on Thursday, and the stakes couldn't be higher for the Mambas.
Currently sitting third in Group G, Mozambique is level on points with Uganda (15), but trails them on goal difference. Their record stands at five wins and three losses, with 12 goals scored and 15 conceded. A disappointing 4-0 defeat to Uganda was followed by a much-needed 2-0 victory over Botswana in their previous World Cup qualifiers in September.
While Algeria leads the group by four points, Mozambique still has a slim chance of securing qualification. They need Algeria and Uganda to falter in their remaining fixtures while securing two wins themselves. Alternatively, the Mambas could grab a spot in the second round as one of the four best runners-up.
Guinea, on the other hand, finds themselves in fourth place with 11 points, having won three, drawn two, and lost three of their eight qualifying games. With eight points separating them from the top spot, even maximum points from their final two matches won't be enough to secure qualification. In September, they defeated Somalia 3-0 and held group leaders Algeria to a goalless draw.
Though out of contention for a World Cup spot, Guinea will undoubtedly fight hard to end their campaign on a positive note. The last encounter between these two teams saw Mozambique emerge victorious, thanks to a late penalty in June 2024.
