Crime Crisis: Top Cop Blames COVID & Migration! You Won't Believe Why!

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has addressed Parliament's ad hoc committee investigating police corruption, highlighting key factors contributing to South Africa's rising crime rates. Masemola pointed to increased migration and the intense competition for limited resources as significant drivers of criminal activity.

During his opening remarks, Masemola explained that natural southward migration patterns, influenced by free movement treaties between African nations, have altered the demographic landscape and intensified resource pressures. He emphasized that the situation has drastically changed since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Since COVID-19, the country has never been the same," Masemola stated. "There’s a lot of unemployment, which also contributes to crime, including new types of crime. Many people from other countries are looking for places where they can find opportunities or something to eat, and unfortunately, South Africa has become a destination of choice."

Masemola's testimony follows two days of questioning of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi's session extended late into the night, concluding just after midnight. Masemola is the second witness to appear before the ad hoc committee.
