JOHANNESBURG - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has conducted a raid on the Sandton home of businessman Hangwani Maumela, seizing luxury vehicles and other assets. This action follows a report detailing massive fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
Among the items seized were several Lamborghinis, including Urus and Aventador models, as well as a Bentley Continental GT V8. The raid is connected to an investigation revealing that over R2 billion was allegedly looted through fraudulent procurement deals at Tembisa Hospital.
The SIU head, Advocate Andy Mothibi, stated that the businessman's syndicate had allegedly secured tenders worth over R800 million at the hospital. The assets identified belonging to the businessman are valued at approximately R520 million, encompassing luxury vehicles and properties worth R293,434,000.
The properties include:
- Property in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, Western Cape
- Property Hartbeestpoort, North West
- Two properties in Sandton, Gauteng
- Property in Zimbali Estate, Ballito, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
- Two Twin Towers property, Cape Town, Western Cape
The SIU was granted an order last month to freeze the assets of the tender tycoon, who was flagged as one of the key figures involved in the Tembisa Hospital scandal. The investigation is ongoing.
