Valletta Convention Celebrates 30 Years

The 19th meeting of the European Heritage Heads Forum (EHHF) took place in Malta this week, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Valletta Convention. This convention is a cornerstone of European policy for protecting archaeological heritage. Minister Owen Bonnici emphasized Malta's commitment to this heritage, highlighting ongoing investments in restoration projects. The government, through the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, aims to improve public access to Malta's historical and cultural treasures.

European Commissioner Glenn Micallef underscored the EU's dedication to balancing cultural preservation with sustainable development, viewing cultural heritage as a key element of European identity. Initiatives like Creative Europe and AgoraEU prioritize inclusion, sustainability, and protection. The European Heritage Days (EHD) program, a joint effort between the Council of Europe and the EU, promotes cultural awareness and participation across the continent.

Superintendent Kurt Farrugia noted the conference's value in fostering collaboration and exchanging experiences among European heritage leaders.

World Cup Qualifier: Malta vs. Netherlands

On the sporting front, Malta faced a tough challenge against the Netherlands in a World Cup 2026 qualifier. The Netherlands, seeking to solidify their position at the top of Group G, were heavily favored. The match took place at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, Malta.
