Drama unfolded at the Wuhan Open as Jessica Pegula stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka, ending her incredible 20-match winning streak at the tournament. Sabalenka, a three-time defending champion in Wuhan, looked set for another final appearance after taking a commanding lead in the deciding set.
However, Pegula, showing remarkable resilience, fought back from 5-2 down to snatch victory. The American veteran dug deep, winning four consecutive games to turn the tide. Sabalenka managed to save two match points, forcing a tie-break, but Pegula proved too strong, ultimately winning 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
"For what I did in the tie-break, I'm just really proud of myself," said Pegula after the match. "I've played so much tennis the last few weeks, so many three-set matches, but I feel like I'm very tough right now and I'm just using that [feeling] as best as I can."
Gauff Advances to Final
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff also secured her place in the final, overcoming Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Despite a somewhat shaky performance, particularly on serve where she served seven double faults and was broken five times, Gauff managed to secure the win. This marks Gauff's first final since her French Open triumph in June.
"I'm really happy with how I played today. It was tough, especially playing on the serve, but I did what I needed to do to get through," Gauff commented. "Sabalenka and Pegula are great players, and I've lost to them both before. But overall, I'm just going to focus on my side of the court and try to control the things I can control."
