President Ramaphosa described the late ambassador as a “remarkable leader” whose unwavering conviction played a crucial role in South Africa’s journey towards democracy. He highlighted Mthethwa's commitment to activism, even when it demanded personal sacrifice.

“Comrade Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa has been taken away from us, yet in the echoes of his deeds, in the memories we share of him, and in the lives, he touched, his spirit endures,” Ramaphosa stated, emphasizing the lasting impact of Mthethwa's contributions.

A Life Dedicated to the Struggle

Mthethwa's activism began in his youth, joining the student movement and eventually participating in the ANC's underground activities during the 1980s. Ramaphosa emphasized Mthethwa's refusal to accept the injustices of apartheid, choosing resolve over resignation.

  • Organising workers at the Just Juice factory.

His dedication to public service extended to his role as South Africa's Head of Mission in Paris, France, where he passed away at the age of 58.
