Bafana's World Cup Dream: Hope Alive? Rwanda Clash Looms!

Bafana Bafana's path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico has become significantly more complicated. What started as a promising campaign has been riddled with setbacks, leaving South Africa's qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

The deduction of three points due to fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, against Lesotho proved costly. This, coupled with a disappointing goalless draw against Zimbabwe in Durban, has put immense pressure on Hugo Broos' team.

Striker Lyle Foster remains optimistic, urging supporters to rally behind the team. "Obviously it wasn’t the result we wanted... It’s how it goes sometimes, we played really well, it was just unfortunate," Foster said. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming match against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium, stating, "It’s just about focusing on the next one, the past is the past, it is time to move forward."

Bafana Bafana's fate is no longer solely in their hands. To secure a place in the World Cup, they need to defeat Rwanda and hope for favourable results in other matches. A Nigeria victory over Benin would guarantee South Africa's qualification. A draw between Nigeria and Benin could also suffice if Bafana win by two or more goals.

The team's performance against Zimbabwe, where they hit the post twice and had a shot cleared off the line, highlighted their misfortune. However, Foster maintains that the mood in the camp remains positive. He believes that with the support of the fans, Bafana Bafana can overcome the challenges and achieve their World Cup dream.

"There is no reason to feel despondent. There is still so much to play for. The support we have had has been great, we just ask for the same (in Mbombela). This is the most important (game) so we ask the supporters to come out in numbers," Foster urged.
