Morocco Soars! Africa's First Aircraft Engine Assembly Plant Takes Off!

King Mohammed VI of Morocco has launched the construction of Africa's first aircraft engine assembly ecosystem, a groundbreaking project spearheaded by the Safran Group with a substantial investment of €350 million. This initiative positions Morocco as a key player in the global aerospace industry, joining a select group of nations capable of manufacturing aircraft engines.

A Strategic Investment in the Future

Located in the Midparc Integrated Industrial Zone, the complex will feature a state-of-the-art plant for assembling and testing LEAP engines, crucial for powering Airbus A320 Neo aircraft. Additionally, a maintenance and repair unit for new-generation engines will be established, making Morocco the second global production site for the LEAP-1A engine, after France.

The project is projected to create 900 direct, skilled jobs by 2030, along with thousands of indirect jobs throughout the Moroccan aeronautics value chain. This significant investment underscores Morocco's commitment to developing a world-class aerospace industry.

Minister's Perspective

According to the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, Morocco's strategic vision has transformed the nation into a vital global destination for cutting-edge sectors. He highlighted the sector's impressive growth, with export revenues increasing from less than MAD 1 billion in 2004 to over MAD 26 billion in 2024.

What it Means for South Africa

While this project is based in Morocco, it signals a broader trend of increasing aerospace activity within Africa. This could potentially lead to increased collaboration and opportunities for South African companies in the aerospace sector, fostering economic growth and technological advancement across the continent. South African businesses may explore partnerships, supply chain integration, and knowledge sharing with the burgeoning Moroccan aerospace industry.

The establishment of Africa's first aircraft engine assembly ecosystem is a significant milestone, showcasing Morocco's ambition and potential. It also serves as an inspiration for other African nations, including South Africa, to pursue similar initiatives and strengthen their presence in the global aerospace landscape.
