Should the Proteas unleash Dewald Brevis's leg spin against Pakistan? While his batting prowess is widely celebrated, his bowling ability might be the unexpected edge South Africa needs. In the first Test against Pakistan in Lahore, the Proteas opted for three specialist spinners: Prenelan Subrayen, Simon Harmer, and Senuran Muthusamy, who bowled a combined 74 overs out of 90 on the first day. However, the inclusion of Brevis could add a different dimension to the attack.
With Kagiso Rabada spearheading the pace attack alongside all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, the options seem limited. Even captain Aiden Markram bowled an over, highlighting the need for more bowling variations. Brevis, a self-proclaimed leg spinner, has expressed his eagerness to bowl for the Proteas.
Brevis's Bowling Ambitions
“I’m very excited, that’s very important for me actually [to bowl for the Proteas], because bowling has been a very big part of my journey and my life. I grew up bowling leg spin, no one taught me that. It just happened naturally,” Brevis stated after the CSA awards in July. He believes the opportunity will arise when the time is right and looks forward to the captain and coach's support.
Inspired by a Legend: Shane Warne
While AB de Villiers inspired his batting, Shane Warne fueled his bowling aspirations. “I always looked up to Shane Warne. Just from watching him bowl, I picked up things. I’m more of a traditional leg spinner. Someone that more bowls with more revs and flight. Not like too quick,” Brevis explained. This traditional approach could be the key to unlocking Pakistan's batting lineup.
Could Dewald Brevis be the Proteas' dark horse? Only time will tell if they'll take that leap of faith.
