Cape Town Marathon: 24k Runners Gear Up for Epic Weekend!

Cape Town Gears Up for Sanlam Marathon Spectacle!

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is set to explode onto the streets this weekend, welcoming a staggering 24,000 runners! Prepare for a weekend of pounding pavements and incredible athletic feats as runners from across South Africa and beyond descend on the Mother City.

The Peace Runs kick things off on Saturday, 18 October, setting a vibrant and energetic tone for the main event. Then, on Sunday, 19 October, the iconic 42-kilometre marathon will take centre stage.

This year marks a significant milestone with the introduction of two start lines – one on Beach Road and the other on Fritz Sonnenberg Road at DHL Stadium. This innovative approach aims to streamline the start and ensure a smoother, faster experience for all participants right from the first stride.

According to race organizers, Sunday will see approximately 21,000 runners taking part, including some of Africa's elite athletes. Saturday's Peace Runs will also feature a significant number of participants, adding to the overall excitement.

Aiming for Abbott World Marathon Major Status

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is currently vying for prestigious Abbott World Marathon Major status. This year represents the final year of evaluation, with the marathon needing to meet a rigorous 104-point criteria to join the elite series in 2026. Success would mark a historic moment, making it Africa's first Abbott Major and placing it alongside renowned marathons like Boston, London, New York, Chicago, Berlin, and Tokyo.

The entire city is buzzing with anticipation. Whether you're a seasoned marathon runner, a casual jogger, or simply a spectator, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon promises an unforgettable weekend of sport, community, and sheer determination. Get ready to witness history in the making!
