The upcoming ODI series between Bangladesh and the West Indies is already generating buzz, and it's not just about the players. All eyes are on the pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur after contrasting opinions from the coaches. West Indies coach Darren Sammy admitted he had “never seen anything like it before,” describing a black surface, while Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons called it a “normal Mirpur wicket.”
Pitch Perfect? Or Pitch Problem?
Sammy highlighted the need for his players to assess the conditions carefully before committing to a batting approach. He emphasized the mantra of 'Assess, Decide, Deliver' (ADD) to navigate the unusual surface. Simmons, on the other hand, suggested the pitch might favour spin as the game progresses, hinting at a potential advantage for the home side.
This series is a crucial test for the West Indies' young batting lineup, with only Shai Hope and Roston Chase having prior experience playing in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Announces ODI Squad
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced their 16-man squad for the three-match ODI series. Middle-order batter Mahidul Islam Ankon receives his maiden ODI call-up. Soumya Sarkar returns to the squad, last representing Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy. Litton Das is unlikely to feature due to a side strain injury.
The Bangladesh squad is: Mehidy Hassan Miraz (c), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Soumya Sarker, Mohammed Saif Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Mahidul Islam Anton, Jaker Ali, Shamim Hossain, Nurul Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Hasan Mahmud.
Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain expressed disappointment with the team's recent performance against Afghanistan, highlighting batting weaknesses. However, he remains optimistic that playing at home will allow Bangladesh to put up a stronger fight against the West Indies. The three ODIs are scheduled at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on 18, 21, and 23 October.
